I chose to get a doula for two main reasons. At first I had hoped to give birth with a midwife, but because I live in a neighbourhood with no birthing centre, I was too low on the waiting lists. Since I have a family doctor, decided that giving birth in a hospital with the help of a doula would offer the best of both worlds. I figured that I wouldn’t have to worry about getting rushed to the hospital in an emergency, but at the same time, with a doula I would be supported and encouraged to avoid unnecessary medical interventions. I also wanted personal attention that a doctor can’t give. It was important for me to have someone to support Erik and I throughout the pregnancy and labour. Marylène fulfilled these needs and more. She was very professional, but also relaxed and gentle. From the beginning, she was clear about what she could offer, but also gave generously. Any time I needed extra information, she found it for me. She was always prepared with all kinds of interesting and important topics to help prepare us during the pre-birth sessions, but was also completely open to changing everything if we wanted to focus on something else. She was also great about recommending relevant additional resources of all kinds.
One of the best things that Marylène did for me, which was completely unexpected, was to record everything that happened during my labour. This is a precious record because for me a lot of it felt like it went by in a blur. She captured a lot of important details so that I can continue to reflect upon the experience.
As a first-time father, going into the hospital while Nat was in labour was quite an intimidating experience. Doctors and nurses are very good at what they do, but sometimes they have to balance that care with facilitating the labour and ensuring the process keeps moving (even to the slight detriment of the patient). This is one of the things that Marylène really helped us with. She ensured that we knew what our options were. When she arrived at the hospital, she was also able to give me ideas and direct me in helping Nat go through the labour pains. And she stayed by our side the whole time, which is a huge support in that kind of situation.
When I think/talk about my birth experience, it always comes down to one key person: my doula.
I had a somewhat traumatic birth experience with my first born: induced labour, minimal to no labour support, tons of medication and procedures, and finally an emergency Caesarean section. I knew when leaving the hospital with my newborn that if I had to do it again, I would do everything differently, starting by having a doula.
Sure enough when I found out I was pregnant with my second, first thing I did was go on a doula hunt. The Lord was too good to me when He placed Marylène on my path. I knew exactly what I wanted from a doula and she simply went above and beyond my all of my expectations.
Marylène, I am forever grateful to you for helping me own the birth of my son and have the successful VBAC I so desperately needed to heal!
Thank you so much for being such a good listener. It’s during the birth process that I actually realized how much you were listening to me during our meetings; you really grabbed on my personal stories, my fears, my apprehensions, my wants, my needs. You answered to all my questions, gave me tips on how to face my unsupportive ob-gyn, and even offered to go with me to my last appointment so she would not force me into another Caesarean section.
I can never thank you enough for believing in me! If I was able to go alone through a huge part of my speedy but oh so intense labour, it is because your words of empowerment really stuck with me. As we got to the hospital the only thing I could think of was the epidural and you did everything you could (your attempts were very funny _) to distract me from that idea because you believed I could go through it without one! Thank you for so much dedication, for letting me pull your hair, strangle your neck, squeeze your hands at the height of pain. You believed in me when I didn’t.
And if one thinks a doula’s work is over after the epidural, well think again!
Marylène, what would I have done without you in that room?! You were our voice. You made sure my birth plan was followed, you asked the right questions, you insisted that they allow me to push in various positions, you said no when the nurses pushed for more medication, you inquired about every single procedures and explained them to me simply, you made sure I always had what I needed, and most importantly, you were able to read me. You knew how much I was afraid of another Caesarean section and you had just the right words of encouragement at the right moments. You stood up for me so that I could have a chance at that VBAC you knew I dreamed about. With you by my side I witnessed how much love a stranger can give to another in a moment of such vulnerability. And we did it! I had a vaginal birth; I was able to be the first to hold my child.
I could go on and on about the difference you made in our birth experience! My family is forever grateful for what you did for us! You are the best and I hope all the mommies you work with in the future will experience what we did with you! God bless you!
